Saxon Dragon Banner model
« on: 02 January 2025, 07:13:49 AM »
I am looking for some Dragon standards for my Saxons.
I have some (I think they are by Renegade Miniatures) but would like some more.  28mm or what would work.

Some companies sell them separately. Gripping Beast for example:

I usually have more than one in a unit as it can help balance out the look of said unit:

Incredibly easy to cobble them out of green stuff or papier-mache and stick it on a spear.

Victrix have Draco standards as part of their Late Roman figure sets. You could always see if anyone has any spares.

Somewhere in my numerous lead piles or bits boxes, I have that very wyvern standard pictured in the tapestry. It may be made by Old Glory but, I won't bet my finger on it.

I'm fairly sure that the old Wargames Factory Saxon Fyrd kit (now sold by Warlord) came with some on the sprues. Might be worth grabbing a couple off ebay or is the Warlord sprue sale still on?

Found it:

It's on the weapon frame, probably the most useful bit in the kit, unless you are looking at making Saxon zombies cos that's pretty much all its good for.

I think the Gripping Beast version is £1.50 but of course you don't get the rest of the plastic weaponry.

Issue is that Gripping Beast somehow charge a minimum of £5 for postage. So it's £6.50 for a single piece of lead.

I reckon it's better value to find a Victrix Late Roman Infantry Command Sprue. Say like this
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/334599498836?_skw=victrix&itmmeta=01JGM9DQ014RB84MPKM4XE1MNE&hash=item4de7af2c54:g:vwcAAOSw7qlnUC5K
Or a Dacian command sprue like this
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/334082293411?_skw=victrix&itmmeta=01JGM9QJ9RQXN664QJZ0QEPBQB&hash=item4dc8db3ea3:g:jXMAAOSwrnhnUC40

This is £7.05 with postage but at least you get two dracos, some figures, heads and weapons etc. Most may not be period appropriate but they may come in useful for something else.

Just to make things sure, one of the two Dacian 'dracos' is a wolf head. Not sure if OP is searching for a dragon or anything like it.

True. I initially only mentioned the Late Roman sprue but added the Dacian sprue option later if the OP wanted more variation.

Found it! To be clear it's a wyvern standard like in the illustration from the Tapestry, not a draco windsock.Problem is, I'm in the US.
