Piney's 1990 Mighty Empires Campaign: The Luccini Affair
« on: 01 January 2025, 01:19:42 AM »

The Nation calls. For my gaming group, starting January 1st, I am running a long-form narrative-driven Mighty Empires "play by post" with my gaming group. This first campaign, set in Tilea during the Time of the Three Emperors, see players as mercenary captains hired by the ruling councils of the Tilean city-states to lead their armies in an attempt to dominate the peninsula.

We are playing with some modifications to the rules set, mostly to make it compatible with The Old World, which we hope to use for most of the battle resolution. Life being what it is, we plan to make good use of the battle resolution tables liberally. The turns will resolve at the pace we can get them resolved but the soft timer is 1 month.

Players will fight under the following victory conditions: the player who controls 3 of the original starting cities by the end of a turn OR has knocked 4 players out of the war wins the campaign. Knocked out of the War: players who lose control of their starting capital city are "knocked out of the war". They can still compete for victory, reclaim their city (or someone else's!) and stay in the fight for as long as they have troops and territory. Knocked out status indicates the international shame of losing their city in international eyes and the raised prestige of their rival as captains of fortune.

Starting Conditions: because of the small map size, rather than controlling a realm of adjacent tiles, each players begins play with only their starting capital city for territory, an amount of starting baggage (described on rulebook pg. 15) and 3,000 points of units to divide between their banners as they see fit. The forces in each banner must be determined before the start of Campaign turn 1. Players whose starting capital is in Tobaro, Remas, Luccini, Miragliano, and Sartosa begin play with 1 free ship, to allow them to interact fully with the map in round 1.

The Map Turn 1:

The Empire general, Graf Von Leitensdorfer, "The Hot Hoof" has taken up power as the dictator of Pavona. Further down the coast, a Bretonnian duke has become invested as the "First Peer" of Luccini. To the north, Ogres seeking fame and foi gras de homme bullied their way into control of Miragliano, while the High Elves of Ulthuan seek to resolve things swiftly from their isolated base in Tobaro.

To the victor goes the spoils!

There are those who seek knowledge to be known by others; that is Vanity.

There are those who seek knowledge in order to serve; that is Love.”

An ambitious project but looks like fun. The original Mighty Empires was a super game in it's own right (even if keeping the tiles in place was a right PITA).
Good luck with it. Hopefully you get the long term commitment from the players to see the full game through. From experience that is where long running campaigns tend to break down.

"It's probably the ultimate ambition of every accomplished Warhammer player...". It certainly is for me. Very much look forward to reading more about this campaign.  :)

Good luck with the campaign -- I have always loved campaigns! It is the personal logistics of herding your cat-like players that's the difficulty...  lol

There's only four of us, so I'm *hoping* we can pull this off!

Lovely!
I've been dreaming of doing something similar myself for well over a decade. Looking forward to see the game developes.
What are you using for the hex map?

It is the physical map, but not physically. I found image files of the 1990 Edition hex sheets and individually cut out each hex with Gimp as individual pngs then built the map in Canva so I could manipulate it as needed. It took...some time as I did not previously know how to use photoshop.
