Some A-12 Shrikes for my Nationalist Chinese, 3D prints
« on: 11 February 2025, 06:01:16 PM »

Frustrated with the expense and rarity of proper 1/72 scale models of inter-war aircraft I decided to take a stab at scaling up some free 1/100 scale STLs for my 3d printer. They aren't "proper scale models" by any stretch of the imagination but they will do nicely for wargaming. You can find more pictures here https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2025/02/curtiss-12-shrike-my-first-3d-print-in.html   And you can see the raw 3D print here https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2025/02/more-monkeying-around-with-my-3d-printer.html

Thanks for posting. I just love 1930s combat planes.

The A-12 was such a cool looking aircraft - those bombers will be great for the Sino Japanese War.

Em dezembro de '81
Botou os ingleses na roda
3 a 0 no Liverpool
Ficou marcado na história
E no Rio não tem outro igual
Só o Flamengo é campeão mundial
E agora seu povo
Pede o mundo de novo

Thanks guys,  The A-12 is almost enough to bump the Northrop Gamma off the throne of "Most Wonderful Spats".

For sheer diesel-punk anti-beauty there is always the Curtiss A-8

If I ever find an STL of the A-8 I will print and paint all thirteen that saw service

That Northrop Gamma was developed in the A-17 strike aircraft, saw quite a bit of service with varied nations. The Peruvians used them in their war with Ecuador in 1941. Some rather attractive schemes too.

carlos marighela, I have a couple of A-17 kits in my collection but they will probably all end up with yellow wings and USAAC marking, I also have a Northtrop BT which has "almost retractable" landing gear. I love those old, weird planes from the 30's

Likewise. When I was a boy I was given an old Player's cigarette card book Aircraft of the RAFwith a complete set of cards affixed within that dated to about 1938. The text was rather breathless about new developments like the Hurricane and Spitfire but the aircraft that stood out were either the sleek and shiny biplanes like the Fury or the Hind or the really weird looking birds like the Heyford and the Stranraer.

I still have that book of cigarette cards.

By the by, you owe to yourself o have a Heyford if you like 1930s weird. Matchbox did one in 1/72 back in the day. You could have a fictional Plan Red and have your doughty USAAC fighters defending New York against Heyfords launched over the Canadian border.

Carlos, treasure that book, I have a similar one of military uniforms circa 1900, paid a minor fortune for it but it was worth every penny! I have a couple of Furies and a Hind plus two Heyfords (which I got at a garage sale for pennies) Kits are available for both the Harrow and the Bombay. Currently I am trying to force myself to build more than I'm buying but the temptation is always there......
