I've been admiring both the victrix plastics and the footsore metals....
I generally have little interest in the dark ages, but I have started to really like the aesthetic of this early period - the later period still does nothing for me, anglo saxons and vikings I find very boring!

Its the victrix plastics that really got my attention - those armoured early saxons have a real nice aesthetic.

Im wondering about using one of these ranges for a Tolkien project - perhaps even for the First Age / Silmarillion. Late roman / Arthurian for the House of Hador, early saxons for the men who sided with Morgoth? (the name escapes me right now). Will need to find them some suitable elf and orc allies....

The early Saxons sold by warlord are sculpted by Colin Patten and are very nice, especially the armoured warriors. I bought some when Colin was selling them himself (as Saxon Miniatures… not confusing at all). I was not impressed (but also not surprised) when warlord doubled the prices after buying the line.

I 100% agree, it was a great line; you did forgot to add, "Then stopped expanding it"! (Infuriating of them).

Colin did sculpt a whole new line of Saxon/Viking figures.  They started on Kickstarter, and are now available at Gripping Beast.

I think you have perhaps misunderstood my statement. I refer to Warlord buying up yet another range, then choosing not to expand the range.

BTW, I have many of the Ragnarok (historical/Norse) miniatures and they are lovely.

As an update I have purchased some Victrix Saxons and so I will soon be finding out myself if I can paint them, if they are enjoyable I will probably buy the Sub Roman Brits so that they match. The Gripping Beast late Romans that I have will have to do for now.
I am always apprehensive about painting figures from a new manufacturer, no matter how I try I cannot make the Perry minis for the Wars of the Roses look respectable or even neat. I do envy people like Captain Blood who makes them look superb.

I was thinking to use them for a Rohan kitbash. Sadly there is only unarmoured/armoured Norman cavalry available, alternatively the late Roman ones. Latter ones might look too uniform though.
Ulfang and his sons are the men who sided with Morgoth, Bor the faithful stayed loyal with the Noldor. Oathmark kits might be a good fit, at least I was not disappointed at mixing Victrix with Oathmark for the Goblins and Orcs.
