I don't know if you have seen Hydra Miniatures' "War Rocket" and "Retro Raygun" ranges.

I think there's a lot of inspiration to find there (different style ships for the various factions).

If you want to scratch-build, a lot of common kitchen/household waste is usable, just go after the shapes/styles you find matching the aesthetics of the ship you want to build.
