« on: October 31, 2009, 10:07:49 PM »
Boosted by an impulsive purchase last week and Alasdair watching Flash Gordon on tv tonight, has anyone played any Flash Gordonesque games ?

If so what rules do you use ?

Any recomendations for ships etc ?

Any good websites ?

Can't beat Rattrap's "Fantastic Worlds" game, IMNERHO.

Seems like the obvious choice to me.

Without sounding totally dense (or maybe not) what does IMNERHO stand for ?

I would guess In My ..... Honest Opinion, but the NER leaves me stumped.

I am running a Flash Gordon game now. I use Fantastic Worlds and I also use the Planet X supplement to FW a lot. For rocket ships, I assume you mean for tactical combat, we are pretty much up a creek until Matt Beauchamp releases his War Rocket rules and mini's. I use the Herb Deeks resin models with my 28 mm figures. They are really too small but no one's complained. These models can be had from Monsters in Motion (in the 'Flash Gordon Buck Rogers Serials' catagory) catalog numbers 18SHD03 and 18SHD04 or from Swapsale. For sites, try Tony LoBue's site http://flashgordon.ws/flash.htm and the Flash Gordon wiki http://flashgordon.wikia.com/wiki/Flash_Gordon_Wiki King features has a comics sitehttp://www.kingfeatures.com/features/comics/fgordon/about.htm with some Flash Gordon stuff on it, especially Raymond books which can also be had from Amazon.

If you want a more RPG approach try Savage Worlds/Slipstream from Pnnacle Entertainment Group. Spaceman's luck!

Have you checked Tony´s (aka Dampfpanzerwagon) absolutely superb project on his blog?

CLICK HERE NOW, YOU'LL LOVE IT!!! ;)

Absolutely spectacular painting and such wonderful cross-use of other figure lines for a perfect overall effect. And his rocketship and tank are even better.

As for rules, I´d probably go with 45a (Fantastic Worlds resp.) as well. I got them for my retro scifi stuff and while I didn´t actually use them yet (well, I didn´t play a single game in almost two years of collecting, but I plan for large-scale skirmish, for which 45a is not really suitable), I absolutely admire the work and ideas that went into that one. And you get a ton of archetypes already worked out to help you start.

If you don't know about them Wargames Supply Dump has some usefull Flash Gordon miniatures in the Dick Garrison range for 28mm http://www.wargamessupplydump.co.uk/dick%20garrison.htm, also Hydra miniatures,http://shop.hydraminiatures.com/index.php?cPath=34, sells Fantastic Worlds and Planet X rules. Matt includes a special edition mini with each book. With Fantastic worlds you get a figure that isn't Flash Gordon and Planet X includes a miniature which isn't Ming the Merciless. I will be using the latter, and I intended to use the former but my player group includes King Vultan and Albert Einstein.

WSG has hawkmen Falconeers in their Dick Garrison range and a son-of-Brian Blessed Prince Volstratos.

And there is always the Heroclix PPP Hawkman for those who have limited time and would prefer to "get stuck in" gaming rather than Prepare, Prime 'n Paint.  :)

Hmmm .... Lionmen.

Lionmen - if you like 'em as Anthropomorphic cat-people ... as in the 1979 Filmation cartoon and also in the comic by Aarden Entertainment .....how about the Panthera Tribe from Black Orc?

http://100k.blackorc.com/roster.php?id=4

Otherwise any semi-naked orange man with big dreadlocks and a beard will suffice.  ;)

Personally. I like the Crocodile Games Basti range for alien cat-people (although they're not specifically leonine...):
