How I designed my ChatGPT-solo wargame opponent
« on: March 02, 2025, 11:14:01 AM »
I bought the simple Adjutant Introuvable solo wargame system and made a ChatGPT-prompt that emulates the system.
Here's my blog https://amsterdamwar.game.blog/2025/02/28/ai-and-wargaming-experimenting-with-artificial-intelligence-on-the-tabletop-i/

Are other wargamers experimenting with AI, too?

I’m intrigued by this - I know your chatGPT prompts include a fair amount of the Agent Introuvable IP - but are you able to share a bit more about the prompt you have created? Does it include the various tables and strategems from Agent Int for example?

Just how long a prompt have you created?

1. I use the paid version. The free version is too limited.
2. You can upload the Introuvable pdf to ChatGPT and ask: create a prompt.
3. I have started with a battlefield creation/strategy choice prompt. First step.
4. Then you check and recheck the output. You'll find for sure mistakes. For example, in my first tests the prompt calculated a new strategy for every sector. I corrected that error and now it maintained the same strategy, but still it made a calculation as if every unit would move three sectors, while the general strategy cards dictate that some units move 2 sectors, some just one and others hold their starting sector.
5. You can use the Introuvable-examples to verify ChatGPT-output and correct misinterpretation. After discovery of the mistake, just ask the AI: improve the prompt.
6. sometimes you need to upload a special section, table or card to the AI, to zoom in on details of the rules.
7. sometimes the prompt is improved but the AI forgets or deletes earlier improvements.

My prompt is now a two page instruction with tables. The prompt follows steps, rolls dice and consults the tables from the Introuvable system.
I suppose that in the near future we can simply upload the rules and ask the AI: act as my opponent, using these rules. For now, I incorporate the rules in a prompt.
Does that answer your question?

Thank you - that is useful - and shows that quite a lot of effort is required (not too surprisingly) to get a useful result.

This is very interesting! I am quite amazed by how ChatGPT has developed. I let the app draw some maps for County Road Z and they were very nice. It would be great if some of the game producers could support the game with an app for solo play, but I guess the profits are way too slim to make that happen

This is really interesting and I think that it's something where a lot more can be developed too. And you clearly put in a lot of work. I think you could theoretically also program something, but this way, there is a little more unpredictability which is always good.

Second part. I now finished the prompt and it appears to work.

https://amsterdamwar.game.blog/2025/03/16/integrating-ai-in-tabletop-miniature-wargaming-ii/

To build an AI opponent, I converted the Adjutant Introuvable rules into a structured ChatGPT prompt. This system, available on Wargame Vault, provides a logical workflow using dice tables to dictate strategy, setup, and tactical decisions. It?s system-agnostic: a dice table with modifiers determines how the AI opponent acts, while the human player translates those actions into their own game system.

I automated the dice tables into an 18-page ChatGPT prompt that includes all original modifiers and additional refinements. Here?s how my (paid version 4o) ChatGPT-prompt works: (see blog link)
