Balian de Ibelin - Kingdom of Heaven

Painted this version of Balian de Ibelin from one of my fave movies Kingdom of Heaven for Darrell Hindley as part of the Steve Dean Forum Figure exchange. Im happy with it but I need to look at improving on painting hair and beards though.

Balian of Ibelin: [to the people of Jerusalem] It has fallen to us, to defend Jerusalem, and we have made our preparations as well as they can be made. None of us took this city from Muslims. No Muslim of the great army now coming against us was born when this city was lost. We fight over an offence we did not give, against those who were not alive to be offended. What is Jerusalem? Your holy places lie over the Jewish temple that the Romans pulled down. The Muslim places of worship lie over yours.

Which is more holy?

The wall? The Mosque? The Sepulchre? Who has claim? No one has claim.

All have claim!

A fine figure and an even finer film, one I love dearly myself.

Much of its very commendable stance on tolerance owes more to our current sensibilities than to the late 12th century though. Any Christian knight uttering the speech above on the walls of Jerusalem in September 1187 would have had his life expectancy reduced to about 20 seconds without any need for the Muslims to get involved...

I love this movie as well and Balian is a wonderful choice. Speaking of wonderful choices, those colors and shading are great. Good stuff!

I'm so pleased with what you have done to the mini- it's certainly the very top drawer as far as the brushwork etc goes!
