Spearhead Scenarios?
« on: 16 July 2025, 12:06:21 PM »
I want to try Spearhead. I've been collecting minis for 1940. As far as I know the rules work best with a good scenario but there is no scenario book for early war. Can anyone explain, what makes a good scenario for spearhead?

...... what makes a good scenario for spearhead?.....

In brief; historical OOBs and objectives.  Forces will not be equal or balanced and "winning" is a very nebulous concept.
It really shines when played as a big game with lots of bases played over an extended period. Having multiple players helps but 2 people can play Spearhead very sucessfully.

Scenarios designed for the (also excellent) Panzer Korps rules will work with Spearhead but you will need to reconstruct the lower levels of the formations as the higher command level of PK aggregates support weapons into units rather than fielding them separately as Spearhead. Simple task as the Spearhead OOBs booklet is extremely good.

For 1940 something like this will give you a good place to start:

You can also look at scenarios for the Command Decision rules as these are nominally the same level as Spearhead (slight differences in unit organisations).
For which the gold standard is the set put out by MGK Military Simulations

None of these 3 rulesets are warGAMES like Bolt Action, they are not designed for equalised points based matches and do not work if played that way.

That's what I'm looking for. Thanks for the reply :-)

The lulu book looks very interesting.
It just might get me back into gaming with my France 1940 figures.
And Wargamevault has a ton of stuff. 8)
Thanks for the post.

All the support books put out for Panzer Korps are worth having, there are "scenario" volumes and nation specific army guides and OOBs. There are well worth picking up.
Sadly Manny Granillo died after a car accident late last year so although all the books are available via Lulu, Panzer Korps support via iO groups is on hold. The rules have a unique way of incorporating support companies into the main combat unit, so  at first force lists look odd. But once you understand how it is done stepping down to use them with lower command level games is straightforward.
