My specific inspiration was Alatriste at the Battle of Rocroi.

While a general war game of the battle was fought, Al would be given tasks to carry out. You could arrange for his colonel to be generous and supportive or alternatively hold a grudge and be out to get Al killed.

The French player would have an equivalent mini to play. Again individual victory points attained by the character minis could be added to the army’s victory points.

I use single based figures with movement trays and base all the officers onto the standard single bases of the same type of soldier. This way they are as rules agnostic as possible, they can lead single based units and also could replace a figure on the movement tray in case they join a unit.
