The World Turned Upside Down - HM 4th Foot
« on: 19 September 2025, 10:23:15 PM »
The 4th Foot have a remarkable history stretching back to 1680 when the first incarnation of the regiment was raised to defend the possession of Tangier, part of the dowry of Catherine of Braganza in her marriage with King Charles II, and so becoming titled the 2nd Tangier Regiment of Foot.

However with the Glorious Revolution of 1688 it would be the first British Regiment to go over to King James II rival, William of Orange later King William III, and it was the latter that awarded them the Royal Lion motif carried proudly on their colours.

In the American War of Independence, arguably some of the first British soldiers to fall were three members of the 4th Foot Light Company killed at Concord Bridge in 1775, with the regiment later involved in the campaign for New York in 1776 and Philadelphia in 1778 before its redeployment to defend British interests in the West Indies against the French.
