I think that the movie was done like this because of the German political correctness.
Really a shame.

It is. We (Blood, Dylan and I) had an interesting discussion with Doomhippie @ GLAM about the impossibility, still, to make war film which truthfully reflects sentiments and actions as they were and happened during the two wars.

Interesting and partly understandable but across my own sentiments on the topic.

here are 2 custom cut clips that compare the two most recent movies

I think the only movie that really shows dogfights authentically must obviously be "Hell's Angels" from 1930

As I said before, love stories do not belong in WWI air movies. And it was the love story combined with the ridiculous end that lowered my rating of Blue Max. Some of the air battles, however, was worthy of applause. It must have been a challenge to film the dogfights during the 60's.

I think Aces High is the best WWI air movie so far. The air battles are a bit stiff but the acting is brilliant and the story is ok.

I really dig that scene from Flyboys with a nose gunner in a, what is it?, a Vickers or Handley Page bomber.

I disagree
it is the romantic spirit of the "aviation knight" that makes a lot of the pilot myth, so love stories are a must, from "Hell's Angels" to "Topgun"

Nothing wrong with love stories. It's when they are crowbarred in with no thought other than to market the film to a broader audience that things fall apart. Good writing is the key, something you don't often get.

Biggles fell in love once. Turned out she was a German spy (albeit a reluctant one, in a Vesper Lynd type of way). He never looked at another woman again. Broke his heart. Probably turned him gay.

Til the contrary is proven, I stand by my statement!  >:D

Perhaps something for the Wings of War. "Broken Heart - expansion pack" Comes with a miniature picnic basket and a weeping pilot.  ;)

Lena Headey does *nothing* to disprove your statement in Red Baron. She's just awful, doing nothing but striking model poses with her scrawny self throughout the whole film.

Biggles gay!  Steady on old fella...

"it was only with Ginger, tucked up close behind me whooping with delight in my ears that I ever felt truly happy"...Dunno what you're talking about...

For my money the most authentic portrayal of the British Airman in the Great War is Lord Flasheart in Black Adder Goes Forth... ;)

Woof indeed...

Is there anyone who likes the Biggles movie from 1986? I haven´t seen it since I was a kid.

That's the one with the sound cannon, the helicopter and the time-traveling twin? Well, I have to say, I didn't consider it a total failure. :D Seriously, it's a fun movie on its own, but I think the Biggles franchise would have deserved better.

I wonder? Has anyone seen the short film Peter Jackson made (using his own repro 'planes)? The film is by far the best  :),excellent filmic quality and no dud storyline line. The rest of the above are just parodies compared to this. Just looked for it on the net,no go I'm afraid........hope P.J. releases it..............?

Have to agree, "Blue Max" is likely the best WW 1 flight movie I have seen, "Flyboys" is short on plot but not bad, certainly not a blockbuster but worth watching if there is nothing else available.
