Empress Zoolahs
« on: July 23, 2010, 11:58:58 PM »
Hi,

I am currently thinking about up selling off my current  (Foundry) Zulu War Collection and up-dating with Empress Miniatures.

It could be just the photographs and the fact that the figures are just ‘primed’ but do the Zulus look a bit rigid and ‘angular’ on the website, in the initial release.

The later (ink washed) figures look fine in the photos and to be fair, the photos of the first British figures look a little 'iffy' primed

Has anyone any Zulus? What is the overall opinion?

Thanks

Im currently painting up some Empress Zulus with some old Foundry and Rapier, although the poses are more varied and there are some nice details I prefer the other two makes. I agree , I think they are a bit rigid in pose. If you do decide to sell your collection , I may well be interested.....can't get enough Zulus at the moment!

Don't let Yankeepedlar see this thread or he will let you know exactly what he thinks of the Empress Zulus  :o

The main issue with them in my opinion is they lack movement, animation and the poses look stiff.

I would use the new Foundry Zulus ( which are the old Mark Copplestone Darkest Africa figures which have been reworked). Captain Blood has made a cracking job of painting some up. If you look back through the threads you should find photos.

I would use the Empress Brits as opposition. Some of the later British sculpts are gorgeous

My plan exactly. The new Foundry Zulus, which are lovely - although their Brits are pretty clunky - versus Empress Brits, which are also lovely.
Not so taken with the Empress Zulus to be honest. To my eye, they lack dynamism. As you say, Mark, a little too rigid somehow.

Even though BTD is impossible to buy from, both their Brits and Zulus are not bad...

The odd British helmets put me off, although I do have quite a few of their Zulus which I like.

I'd agree 100% with Malamute and the Cap'n, although I'd certainly not discount the Empress Zulus. I like them, but not as much as the Foundry versions.

Out of all the current ranges, Empress' British are the best by far  :)

I'd like to say something about this topic please. The Empress Zulus are not bad figures, just not as good as their British infantry and cavalry and artillery. I have about 140 in my collection now. Its true, if I were starting from scratch I'd have the new Foundry Zulus from choice, and they do mix well with the Empress ones I've found, but as it is I'll probably have the nes Zulus from Empress which I hear are due soonish. I just hope they exude more animation, threat and naked savagery really!

Hi,

Cheers for the replies lads.

I have seen the new Foundry's but am slightly put off by them being nearly £2 per figure (£11 for 6?), even the multibuy makes them £1.60ish - although using multibuy means that you can have 24 Empress for 18 Foundry.

Mr Bickley, you say that they Empress are making some new Zulus?

Cheers
