Boilers? how to?
« on: 28 August 2010, 05:32:17 PM »
I have multiple project that are nearing that point where I really need to install some boiler tanks, but how in the name of the gods do you make them yourselves? Mainly the spherical ends are boggling me, I could see using smaller bottles for it, or finally get myself to buy the modular bio-toxin plant set. (talked about that before: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=16708.0)

Anybody have some good advice, I'm pretty sure there are more people strugling with this!

I did one earlier this week from a Kinder egg capsule if that helps.

I'd suggest not using any PVC or similar soft-ish plastics, unless you have a good covering substance - cardboard tubes topped with acrylic plastic domes, which you can often get from craft stores, work nicely, although it may be a bit difficult to find matching sizes.

I think I shall ad PVC undercoat (it exists apparently) to my DIY shopping list.

Car primer should work as well, but I've found normal modelling primers don't stick well enough, especially if the piece is frequently handled. If you use a PVC or soft plastic, a special primer may be the best option, but not strictly necessary, I guess.

If you have any cable-insulators, you could use those quite well too.  I used half of one for the gearbox for the CSS Caudell, here:

Pssst, linked to a discusion of  that one in the first post  ;) but taking in to account shipping its a lot to pay for a single boiler and some piping.

*blush*

I didn't recognize the ref as I never heard it called Bio-Toxin; yes, should have followed the link in the first place.

And, yes, expensive, but it's such a lovely bitz box for later projects.

Did I also miss references to coin-dispensed toys? The capsules have a nice spherical nature, come in two or three sizes, and are pretty cheap. In the US, they used to be common at exits of grocery stores, and I think Toys-R-Us still have them. Unless those are all candy; haven't looked closely lately.

For cheap small boilers there's always party poppers:

I'm lazy and buy HO/OO scale lineside storage/oil tanks and add rivets to taste.
Don't!

That's not lazy!

The Chemical Plant parts already have the rivets on them. ;->=

Course, I suppose you could find tanks also with rivets already, but I've not seen them.

You want lazy? I'm going to take a toy train engine, set it in a boat, and deck around the trucks. ;->=

I wouldn't bother, but the boat SHOULD have a deck. I may or may not remove the crew cowling...
