So what was going on in Afghanistan between the wars?
« on: 15 October 2010, 01:38:47 AM »
I get the feeling that there is a big obvious answer to this question, but I was looking for some sources on what was going on in Afghanistan and that area during the interwar years?

Am I in the wrong part of the forum?  :D

(As in, should this be posted in BoB?)

for starters, there was the 3rd (or is that nth) Anglo-Afghan War in 1919.  After that, Afghanistan was about as stable as it ever gets for several decades - up to the coup of 1973 (which in turn lead to the 1979 Soviet invasion).  The King of Afghanistan even visited London (late 1920s, IIRC).  The government was stable, there was even moderate modernisation in Kabul, although the hinterlands remained a traditional society as ever.  The Germans were involved in development projects in Afghanistan throughout this period

You can look for a copy of 'The Road to Oxiana', by Robert Byron, for a taste of what Afghanistan was like in 1933-34.

There was a fair amount of excitement immediately to the north of Afghanistan, as the Central Asian khanates enjoyed a short spell of independence before being forcibly merged into the Soviet Union - much of the BoB adventures deal with this region.  Look for Col Bailey's 'Mission to Tashkent' and Hopkirk's 'Setting the East Ablaze' for the RCW in Central Asia.

If you can get your hands on the Foundry book, 'Risings and Rebellions', it has lots of tidbits on global interwar hotspots.

you could also look at Naval & Military press, some cheap reproductions books dealing about the Revolt of Pathans during Interwar period , Waziristan;
 also a great book by Chevenix-Trench " Frontier Scout" is dealing about warfare on the "Grimm" from 1900 to 2 WW.
