ShadowSea game launched - powered by Song of Blades rules
« on: 14 November 2010, 12:20:58 AM »
I have been working on the ShadowSea game for a while and just launched the game and a new blog site. The game is very pulpy in theme, set in the late 17th century, with pirates, adventurers, cultists, and savage native species scouring a lost underground world for ancient artifcts. I figured this site would be an apt place to post about it. The blog will be where passages are posted from recovered logs, journals, enscriptions and spoken tales from the different forces battling in the Underlands.

The game itself is fast-paced and based on the Song of Blades ruleset by Ganesha Games, using 28mm scale figures and are available for purchase as a PDF from the blog. A printed version is also in the works for later this year. Official miniatures are in production by Cavalcade Wargames under their Dragonblood line. Six unique forces search for ancient artifacts and golden treasures through crumbling ruins, trap-filled catacombs and underwater citadels.

If anyone has any questions or has some input for scenarios or just wants to chat about minis, feel free to chime in.

cheers,

Eric

I always liked that range of figures, especially Bob Olley's work on the giant Elephant-man.  Glad to see the range being supported.

I've bought all of the SBH series, and I'm pleased to report that this is the most comprehensive and user-friendly of all.   Furthermore, the fictional setting is quite compelling:  it feels like all the best of Cthulu, Hell Dorado and Steampunk rolled into one!  I'll be using this one for a long time to come, and with the plethora of characters, settings, equipment and advancements, we'll never run out of material.

Superb effort!

Werner Klocke is doing new Amazon's for Freebooter's Fate, the first of which looks pretty sweet.

There's also the Sisters of the Blade models for Reapers Warlord that I think would make nice fill in models, if you didn't happen to like the official models for the Amazons in ShadowSea. These are more clothed, but I think overall they'd make really nice proxies if again you didn't like the official ones...

So this game has a lot of setting specific rules? That could go both ways with songs I guess.
Anyhow the main question for me would be this, does it have different magic rules to the SoBaH? That is perhaps the only place I feel the system fails, and I have to say I am tempted to write a "Songs of tomes and sorceries" for some time now.

Thanks for asking. Actually, the magic rules have been expanded upon the basic SOBH, so now spellcasters can cast multiple types of attack spells - energy bolts, directed blasts, and energy balls, and different types of psychic spells, transfix, mind control, and illusion. The same basic casting system is used, but there are just now more choices on what to cast. Similarly, there are a different gunpowder weapons  guns, grenades and cannons.

The technology section is something new, with rules for all sorts of "ether" powered weapons and "magic items", as well as biotech weapons.

Probably the main change though is the addition of rules for more detailed physical activities, like leaping, climbing, breaking, and forcing objects on the map. This adds a different feel to gameplay since models are more free to move around the map in all directions.

Everything is still kept pretty simple though, with the intent of making it play quickly but still have some depth.

Use whatever miniatures you like. Use paper minis if you want or commission Kev to sculpt you something, the game is miniature agnostic.

If anyone has requests for specific miniatures to be made next or sculptors to use, just send them over to Cavalcade Wargames.
