Brush size recomendation for 15mm minis
« on: 23 January 2011, 10:59:34 PM »
Hello everyone, I normally paint up 28mm minis, but recently have purchased some 15mm minis for my latest project (wild west) and wondered what brand and size(more importantly) is best suited to this type of miniature? I have brushes that are good for 28mm but are useless for 15mm, I need to buy online as there is no store locally that caters for what we do.... please help !!

I'd suggest the smaller end of the range, 0, 00 and 000... that's zero, double zero and triple zero.

Apparantly 0000 and 00000 exist but I've never seen them. Note that brush sizes are often written like 2/0 that meaning double zero.

As for make I'd go for the most expensive ones you can agreeably afford, but look after them. My best ones are Series 7 Kolinsky Sable Brushes... http://shop.winsornewton.com/products/category/1535.0.4.3.1217.54535.54536.0.0? not cheap but incredible.

Also buy some specifically made brush soap or liquid brush cleaner... my first sable brushes lasted thirty years still using a few of them, all because I took great care of them.

There is no standard brush sizes. One company's 00 might be the same as anothers 0000. So judging over the internet can be really difficult. the more 0s the smaller the brush within a line of brushes. Also the type of paint you are using will make a diference. Acrylics tend to be a little thicker than enamels so you will need to use thinner brushes with acrylics to get the same line.

I prefer to use a good pointed Winsor & Newton #1 sable for just about everything, with occasional use of a #0 and even rarer #00 in situations where a larger brush interferes with my sight-lines. A bigger brush holds more paint, so needs refreshing less often, and if it's a good brush the point of a #1 is just as sharp as a #00.
