Help: Transvaal buildings
« on: 20 March 2011, 09:56:02 PM »
I'm not in the mood for painting, so maybe it's time for some scenery for the 1880 Tranvaal war. I have only seen some pictures of Potchefstroom in "A rain of lead", so I'd welcome any other photographs or drawings of buildings. I'm specially interested in the more isolated Boer farms.

Mmmm, haven't I asked this before? ???

Can't provide any photos but have had a poke about for similar info for colonial gaming in 6mm. Typically most of the more colonial style wooden buildings as used by ACW gamers are perfect as are some of the stone/brick ones.

You might also want to try buildings in the traditional Dutch style, although that was more common around the cape. Also don't get distracted by the Cape Dutch Revival style which was about 25-30 years later.

Good Luck.

I was thinking of buying that plastic ACW farm that everyone sells, but it looks too American. In fact Potchefstroom looks a lot like a USA town of the time, with some thatched roofs here and there. Also, how common was corrugated iron by 1880?

Not 100% sure but I'd say fairly common in South Africa, I've seen an awful lot of photo's where it's used. The reason for me not being 100% sure is that most of those photo's are 1890-ish. Would 10 years make that much difference?

Edit.................

If it's good enough for the Perry's... (again slightly later date)

Lol @ the stone watertower! XD lol

for the corrugated tin, i think it was pretty used, since i've seen many photos of it... of course not the green glassfiber version that is used today!

Apparently it existed, although not exactly the same material than later:

Guess when and where this pic was taken?

The Falkland Isles, 1980s. The mad rush of technology, eh?  lol

I'd also be happy to use this type of "American" building in 1880s South Africa, in fact the Perry building is on my list to buy for kitbashing a farm and trading post for this era. Either CGI or teddy-bear fur thatch roofs would be fine.

Well picked. The Perry farmhouse, with roof replaced by Tin is the perfect Falklands residence. Also works exceptionally well for large portions of rural Australia, where 'weather board' is still king.

Well, my neighbour's beach house looks like Hadrian's villa (complete with statues around the swimming pool, horrible stuff!) and that doesn't prove anything lol

I'll start with some Rorke's Drift style buildings because I'm not sure about how the farms looked like. I'll try to scan some 1880s pictures later this week.

Yes corrugated iron was madly popular, and still is in a lot of areas. For scale fanatics I have a list of the standard sizes...

/wanders off

Oh bugger, I found the plasticard equiv. which had the info on a sheet of paper stuck to it and the paper has gone.

If anyones truly interested PM me and I'll come back here and list the sizes as I've an order due in of the stuff.

Heh, hadn't noticed that.

Fair, but a more apt comparison would be between roofing tiles used now and 10 years ago. I suspect the commonly used ones are very similar.

I think the Perrys used ACW buildings with sprayed silver corrugated plastic card blu-tacked to the roofs!!

Not a bad idea.
