Russians and turks.
« on: 03 September 2011, 09:56:06 PM »
I have been looking for books etc on the fighting between the Russians and turks during the great war, but I dont seem to find too much on it. Can anyone recommend a book or site on the campaigns. Have some 20mm Russians and I would like to get some Turks to fight some scenarios out.

Basic description of the fighting there in Wikipedia (look through the same page in other languages - there are important differences and different illustrations).
 There is also a list of literature that described the topic.

While not exactly history, John Buchan's novel "Greenmantle" has the Russian siege of Erzurum as its climax.  Gripping read, especially as it was written in 1916!

Strongly recommend reading "A Peace to End All Peace" about the end of the Ottoman Empire immediately after WWI. Lots of Back of Beyond material there.

Ordered to Die covers the Turko-Russian front fairly well, but a high level (Brigade/Division)  There really aren't any lower level tactical histories that I am aware of.  Gallipoli, because it was a victory, sprouted a few Turkish Company level autobiographies.  I doubt anything similar arose out of the Russian front defeats.
Clear the battlefield and let me see
All the profit from our victory.

You are right books on the Russian and Turkish wars are certainly thin on the ground.

I can recommend one that has some info that you may need although it features the Middle East. It is David Fromkin's : A peace To End All Peace:The Fall of the Ottoman Empire and the Creation of the Modern Middle East;

The Bibliography will  provide other sources.
