Magnets - Help
« on: 12 September 2011, 01:00:35 AM »
I recently met up with some young lads who were magnetizing their resin GW models (dreadnoughts). After listening to their plans I offered the best advice I could about how to proceed, but was wondering is there is a good tutorial available that gives guidelines for fitting magnets - the small Neodymium magnets into resin models.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Thank you.

From the Flames of War site:

http://www.flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=943

This article has to do primarily with fitting turret magnets in pairs, and Battlefront has recently been providing magnet holes in the hulls of their newer releases, but the general principles are sound.

I've used them for fitting 1:600 aircraft to flight stands, alternative armament to 15mm armored vehicles and crew-served weapons, and even crew members in the towers of 28mm elephants.  All the guidance for planning, marking, and correctly orienting the magnets in that FoW article apply.

I have purchased most of my magnets from Dom Skelton at Dom's Decals, but there are other fine suppliers.

Here's a pretty simple walkthrough from the Privateer Press forums (magnetizing magical robots for different weapon configurations):

Both of those look very useful.  The Privateer Press walkthrough is particularly good.  I may have to try this sometime soon.

I've used magnets in al my 15mm tanks (both FoW and Sci-Fi)
Even on these (and they're really small) :

I drill a hole the size of the magnet in the pivoting point of the turret and of the tank. Too much off centre will give you an akward rotating turret !!!
make sure the magnet sits level with the surface.
Check the polarity before you glue it in place! you wouldn't want your turret to be rejected.
I then glue the magnet in place with TEC7. (very good stuff)
And that's it.

Neodymium magnets are very strong, so to economise, you could try using just 1 magnet and a piece of (ferro)metal.

P.S. I got my magnets from http://www.supermagnete.de They got all sizes and shapes.

Thank you for the two modelling links and the comments - they are all very useful.
