Encounter at Grimminhagen Graveyard
« on: 06 December 2011, 12:56:57 PM »
Finally got around to posting this year's Halloween skirmish battle on my blog the last few days.  The background is still pretty much Warhammer Fantasy/Mordheim, but this year we decided to try using the basic rules and other stuff from GW's Lord of the Rings SBG and Legends of the High Seas.

Part 1 is more about the rules, scenario, roster and objective cards as well as set up and initial deployment.

Part 2 gets into the actual telling the tale of the game itself.

An enjoyable evening that hopefully you'll find interesting.  Here's a few teaser pics:

Now that was just the thing I needed to make getting up this morning worth the effort...for the most part. I just left a comment in your other thread about your FANTASTIC Witch Hunters...their adversaries are of a similar HIGH STANDARD. AND the terrain completes the picture WONDERFULLY. GREAT STUFF; thanks for posting.

Fantastic job on both miniatures and scenery, Sir!
 :-* :-* :-*

Amazing paintjobs and conversions on the minis and I love the look of your scenery, it all ties together very nicely.
Great write up on the blog, too. Will have to go back and re-read it to see if there are any more ideas that I would like to steal borrow!  ;)

I love the blue/grey of the stonework.
What is your recipe for that?
(I want to paint a thieves warband in a 'night' setting and that colour looks ideal.  ;) )

Thanks everyone!  Other than the minis and terrain, I hope you enjoyed the rules/scenario we put together along with the write for the game.  I tried to remember to include most of the details and scanned the roster and objective cards so others could have a shot at playing a similar game if they wished.

The stonewark on the terrain is actually different layers/highlights/drybrushing of "brown" greys not blue ones.  However, the way I've done blue grey stone in the past is to use GW's Shadow Grey as part of the process.  Both in mixing with black and adding more and more Shadow Grey and then coming back with the highlights and adding more and more Codex Grey to the Shadow Grey, and finally a bit of white to the mix for the final highlights.

The stonework of this graveyard was done with successive layers of lighter generic "brown" greys, but about 2/3 of the way through I did a thinned down green wash to give everything a tinge of mold and mildew, and then came back with the final highlights.  Maybe that's the effect you are seeing in the pictures.

Thanks again,
Jason

Thanks for the response, Der Feldmarschall.

I could swear that they appear 'blue' to me.
Maybe it is the settings on my screen.
Will give your blue recipe a bash, however, and see how that comes out.

I love the way your painted your GW Graveyard.
I repainted mine in a much more sandstone colour (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=30667.15#top) and it is interesting to see your take on it.

Are the stairs on the large piece in the centre of the fourth picture scratchbuilt or are they commercially available?
They are fantastic.

They look blue in the pics to me too.   :)  Some of the closer up pics on my blog look more like real life.  But from a distance they look pretty close to what you see in the pics.  Green does have blue in it so it might be playing with my digital camera a bit.

The stairs are scratch built.  I love the sandstone color you used.  I really need to come back and check out the thread when I have more time.  I was thinking of trying something similar for some future more historical projects.

All this graveyard stuff was painted back 2003 and needs to be updated a bit, especially the bases/ground to match my current boards.  GW's new Garden of Morr has given me the excuse to go back and work on some spooky terrain again.   :)

Great looking stuff Jason, will have to check out the scenario rules.  Are you guys playing up at Village Games now rather than Tower?  Was wondering if you guys were going to have a Halloween game this year, I always miss out.

Eric tried for awhile to see if there was any interest for a Halloween type game at Tower Games on Oct. 29th, but there were no takers.  He somehow got a kitchen pass from the wife on the 28th, and suggested since I live up in Elk River the we tryout playing at Village Games.  They just expanded early in Oct. with a brand new game room so it turned out pretty nice.
