Scale question
« on: January 12, 2008, 06:14:19 PM »
Hi,
I have yet to pick up T&T, but am very impressed by what I have read about it.  I noticed in some of the descriptions that the rules are designed for 25/28mm scale, but I was wondering how well it would convert to 1/72 or 15mm.  My space and budget are currently limited so I was considering a smaller scale.

As a side note, I am unsure just yet what theater of battle I want to pursue.  I am currently leaning towards the Boxer Rebellion, but I want to know more about the Warlord period.  Can anyone suggest a good reference book that would tell me more about that period?

Thanks,
David

Hi David,

I think that the rules can be easily adapted to other scales. The only thing I´d make sure is that all figures are based following the same convention. Now, I wouldn´t use 25mm bases for 20mm/1:72 figures; 20 or 15mm are better, and should work well; of course, you´ll have to take care to space out your troops if facing artillery. I´m using 15mm for all my 20mm stuff, and to date, it worked very well.

I recently did some concepts on adapting our rules for 20mm Vietnam (which is my latest fad), and calculated some aspects. Generally, movement rates and weapon ranges do not need to be adjusted too much, but I´d suggest possibly reducing the close combat ranges (which were deliberately scaled with 28mm figures on 25mm bases in mind). But that´s a minor thing.

15mm, now, that might be a bit different. Again, less of a problem if you have single-based figures, but if you have "stands", you might have to do some converting, because T&T isn´t really a mass battle system. Otherwise, just treat each stand as a single figure, and have the "large scale" on an aesthetic level.

Thanks, that helps a lot.  My current thoughts are to do some Boxer Rebellion games using Cellmate 15mm miniatures.  They don't seem to be the most detailed figures, and they are limited in poses for the Foreign/Western forces, but their cost would allow me to build suitable forces within my current budgetary restraints.  I would individually base each miniature, probably on 3/4" metal washers if that fits the rules ok.

Sure, 3/4" shouldn´t be a problem - we use 25mm/1" as a "standard"; note that it is not totally compulsory, but works best and is somehow an accepted convention for 28mm figures.
