Adventures in the Age of Heroes
« on: 24 January 2012, 07:41:37 AM »
Greek Myths have always had a big attraction for me.

With the release of Wargames Foundry's 'Tribes of Legend' Range, it was time to do something about it, as I'm a nerd (my wife's words, not mine - I prefer classically educated).

As travel in ancient Greece was almost always by sea, a ship waste needed. Below are my efforts to scratch build a bireme in the classical style. I choose to do the bireme from this period as other posts on this forum convinced me that, no-one does Greek Myths better than Hollywood!

My Bronze Age heroes will have to wait a little longer.

My bireme at anchor with sails furled. I would suspect the she will be used mainly in this form in most games.

Here is a good shot of the sail. This actually is my test sail, in time I want to replace it with a huge Medusa head design that will cover all of the sail area. I have heavily weathered the sail as as my thoughts on the hot Aegean sea and sun would quickly fade any dye and fabric of the period.

Side veiw. The checkboard design and eyes I got off the net, I then then printed them off on paper. Cut them out and glued them onto the painted model. To blend them inwith the rest of the ship, I weathered them slightly with a brown wash.

The rear view. Overall I'm not to happy with the tail of the ship, I think it should be more elaborate. I'll have to find something to attach to the crest top to give it some flare.

It's beautiful ship, very nicely built and the painting on the sail is amazing. Though agree something covering more of the sail area coud be a little better. Anyway, well done, please keep it going.

Wow! Great work - please make sure you update if you do create a new sail!

Will we see some crew next?

Thank you all for your most encouraging words.

I have already started on the second sail. I'll post it later.

Excellent!  As to the stern detail, I'm impressed that you were able to bring such a complex stern together so neatly.  Thanks for posting.  Richard
