Strange dice?
« on: February 26, 2012, 02:03:03 PM »
Can any one think of any possible uses for various educational types of d6s?

I just managed to get my grubby paws on the following d6s labelled as follows:

First dice: Numbered 7 to 12 might be useful in conjunction with a standard d6?
Second dice (A question dice): When?, What?, How? Why?, Who? Where? Might be useful for character driven skirmish games?
Third dice (Money dice): 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p.
Fourth dice (Sounds): sh, y, k, w, ch, th.
Fifth dice (Shapes): circle, square, triangle, rectangle, pentagon, hexagon.

While I really like them I have no real idea of what to use them for, I thought they could be good for some sort of game mechanics/rules and or decision making process during a game as opposed to using more traditional d6s.

I have a d10 with Hebrew #'s on it. I don't read Hebrew but I NEEDED to buy that dice. :) Sometimes owning is enough.

I have a die with red, white, blue, black, yellow and... green I think faces.

And another one marked (I think) E O U S T *

I don't know what to use them for either.

I must say I have always preferred d10s to d6s as I prefer and would certainly like to see more percentile based game mechanics as I find them seemingly more realistic and easier to visualise. A Hebrew d10 be useful for any Judeo Israeli games. As for a coloured d6 it may be useful for opposing side orders in a solo game, namely:
Red charge
Black fire and move
blue fire
green advance/move
white hold
yellow withdrawal/retreat
This would certainly result in a rather erratic and random game with a rather aggressive opponent.

Certainly unusual dice are nice to own even if they are useless - can be useful at times as casualty and morale status markers. Indeed be handy to have one marked:
D - disorganised
S - Shaken
R - Routed
G - Good order
M - Still need to make a morale check
But even that leaves one side unaccounted for  - bother... lol

I did like the old GW dice with directional arrows which come in handy for everthing from artillery to unpredictible troops like animals such as terrified elephants

I would use the Who? What? When? Why? etc.. die when my PC's make successful Gather Information Roles, or on when they torture prisoners for information, pay an informant, question a witness.  I would use it to determine the type of info acquired, come to think of it I will have to make myself a chart for this purpose...

That's a great idea.

Sort of 'Random Clue Generation' - useful for detective-style settings, superhero capers, finding the blasphemous and cyclopean secrets of the Uneartly Cult of No Human Aspect, foiling the machinations of Dr Sinister and the League of Evil, or feeding leads to Agent 009...

Right, I need to get one of them...
