I've always used 5150 from Two Hour Wargames. It is a good system and very flexible. If you buy both sets, 5150 - Star Army and 5150 - New Beginnings, you can do everything from platoon level ground combat to individual and very detailed role playing.

@Agis: There is no points system given in the main rulebook. As tnjrp indicated, I believe there has been a points system published somehere... ;)

The rules were initially intended to work around orders of battle for a given scenario. Since troop quality and moral are the only "stats" that concern the player, its not difficult to utilize whatever models or unit types the players wish. The rules as published only make a nod towards "game balance" since they are intended to reflect combat in a more realistic manner than most points system games seem able to achieve. In a nutshell: you use the forces you have which are not necessarily those that you would want.

Regardless of any disparity of forces within a scenario, TW is an elegant rules system which gives a very good game I think.  :D :D

I have Tomorrow's war.  I haven't had a chance to play it and I don't think I'll get one anytime soon.  Its hard to figure out the game just by reading the rules - the order is a bit convoluted and there is a lot of repetition (for some stuff) and other items are just glossed over.  Its like I need someone else to write a tutorial document for me - not something I required for ViDe - one read through and I get it all!  Nothing more complex than it needs to be - but still lots of choices to make on the battlefied.

There is a "beta" points system out there, and its a good start - but it lacks any sort of composition or vehicle design type guidelines to go with it.  As such its a good way to help balance scenarios or to have a gentlemanly battle with a good friend who is not out for blood, but it would not work at all in a semi-competitive environment.

Anyway, the point of this thread wasn't for me to poo-poo on everyone's rules systems - they all have their strengths and weaknesses.  What I wanted to convey was that I'm really picky, but despite that ViDe is exactly what I was looking for - so I think others may like it too!

Yes, everybody eventually finds a system that they fall in love with - or failing that, write their own that somebody else then falls in love with - and once they do, they go spread the love around...

Perhaps not quite what the OP indicated but what the heck, you can't threadjack your own thread really ;)

Nicely put tnjrp, thanks.

I was actually in the midst of writing my own game.  It had many similarities to ViDe but more complex, unplaytested, and would have taken me at least a decade to finish at the rate I was moving.  So thank you Agis for sparing me from that journey!

I am on it Tim, hopefully the end product will justify your faith! (But putting you in the play test team will ensure this, eh?) ;)
cheers and keep on gaming, Agis - https://www.adpublishing.de

Ya know, there's an OOP Ral-Partha game, Final Frontier. It's on E bay sometimes. It has some cool 15mm minis in it, and is a fantastic skirmish game, try it if you can find it! Recommended!

FUBAR FTW.  My sons and I frequently pit space marines against Daleks, lizrdmen with guns vs. The A-team etc.  Anything goes.  No more rules shopping for me.
This is my boomstick!
