Rogue Trader Las-Cutter
« on: 09 May 2012, 03:52:02 PM »
I was flicking through the 1st edition 40K rulebook a couple of weeks ago and the rules for Las-Cutters got me thinking. Las-Cutters are pretty big pieces of kit; heavy, industrial strength lasers used for cutting through steel walls among other things, and knock 3" off the move rate of anyone handling them.

It seemed to me that something that heavy could do with being represented on the tabletop, so with a few cogs from my bitz box to represent the "barrel" of the cutter and a doll's house kitchen range I kitbashed one. It's about half an hour's work, mostly done while I half-watched a film I had seen before but the other half hadn't.

The rings on the cooker made for dials/data screens, and the kitchen sink made for a nice open hatch to show the laser beam glowing. In hindsight I wish I'd painted warning chevrons at the business end of the cutter and around the hatch, but I'm happy enough with it as is.

Cool, I was going to make one for a space pirate mining camp I've been planning. I like what you've done!
a mixture of quick parts, sarcastic humour, reserve, and caprice.

One of the Forge World Elysian teams has a lascutter.

Also, some of the old RT Imperial Army jump troopers had them.

So just because they slow you down, doesn't mean they HAVE to be big and unwieldy.  They might just require a stable firing stance to keep the beam "on station".

I really like the cutter. Looks like something out of classic Doctor Who. Something the Tomb era Cybermen would use.

It reminds of Star Trek TOS episode The Menagerie (a reworking of the original pilot footage into a double episode) where they took one of the phaser cannons off of the ship and used it to break into the Talosian's facility. Illusion made them think it was ineffective when in reality it has blown the top off the complex.

And it's a bit similar to the idea in Forbidden Planet of building perimeter defense guns out of their ship's weapons.

Thanks guys, glad you liked it. Chromedog, good point on the size issue, and I never knew the Elysians had one.  8)

A mate has an Elysian army, so I get to see the goodies fairly often.

Pretty mediocre in current rules, though (then again, 40k is pretty mediocre as a set of rules).

Fair call on 40K's rules, I'm not a fan of the current edition. Rogue Trader is still king to me, however.
