British Cavalry

I need some proper British Cavalry for my VSF games. Lancers would be great too for anti-tank duty. Question is miniatures. Do I go Crimean War (Great War Miniatures) or theZulu War route? Suggestions on miniatures and their makers welcome. 28mm, ofcourse.

Well that depends on what other Brits you have and where they will be fighting?
For me, the pith helmets scream out Britishness and are easily recognised, that's the only real reason I chose them over Crimean.

As rob says if you want pith helmets them Empress Zulu War or Perry Miniatures Sudan campaign lancers.

The crimean uniform with the Czapka plumed cap looks great and the Great War miniatures are perfect for that.

For something different and perhaps more exotic I use a unit of Bengal Lancers (The Queens Own Khalibar Lancers) I like to have troops from the colonies represented and you can paint them in their colourful dress uniforms. Perry Miniatures do some in the Sudan range. (They always perfrom terribly on the battlefield, usually gunned down in some ill fated but glorious cavalry charge.)

If you want a home service look then the only ones I know of are the now OOP Honourable Lead Boiler Suit Company figures. I guess the Crimean War uniform is there or there abouts. Purist will spot the difference, but it is VSF....

I think there is also a GW conversion kit for Lancers with pith helmets. I think they are rather pricey though and I don't have a link. Sorry.

Empress Zulu War lancers. Definately the most 'British' in appearance. Big colourful front panels and pith helmets!

At some point I'm going to do a unit of Aussie NSW Lancers using them. They had an identical uniform cut but it was brown with red panels/facings and they had side pinned slouch hats with a feather in it, just has to be done

You could always look to Eureka's Pax Lipopo Light Brigade Lancers for something a bit different and very VSF.

Thanks for all the suggestions. As this is VSF I might do a little of both. I use Ironclad infantry for the actions happening on the homeland, and Empress Zulu redcoats for those battles fought abroad. Maybe do the same here.

I wanted some proper horse riders, too.
Also adding to the list I need some French artillery for the late 19th century. Foundry's about the only ones who do them and I'm not paying those prices. I'm really surprised nobody does FPW French artillery or even early WW1 French Artillery. I need them to man a mole mortar.
Also building a few shoulder mounted anti-tank teams.

Malamute, I commented on his site when/if he would make these available to the rest of us. He said he was looking for someone to produce them. Maybe someone on this Forum with a miniatures line? Really like what he's doing.
