Faux Fur Question
« on: 31 December 2012, 01:34:43 PM »
Gents

I've bought some Faux Fur and am in the middle of trimming it to size - next comes the colouring.
I've searched various threads on the net and seem to be getting conflicting advice.
What are the various ways of doing it, best practices, pitfalls etc?

cheers
Geoff

What are you using it for?

For thatch I fixed it on the roof then mixed the relavant colour with PVA and brushed it on liberally and let it dry.

It dries hard so when wet you can comb or adjust how it sits to taste. Then I trimmed off the excess or any fluffy bits I missed.

The brushing on the PVA/paint mix was very messy. Or maybe that is my technique  :D

It depends what you want it for.

I have black false fur that I use for thatch. I paint it with yellow paint mixed with a few drops of glue (white glue for wood). The false fur "drinks" a lot of paint. No need to waste expensive paint, any cheap acrylic paint will do.

At first I was afraid that it would look too yellow, but when dry it darkened and it went light greyish yellow - just the colour of old thatch  :) but that probably depends on the orgininal colour of the false fur.

Elladan.de has some great guides for that.
