Thanks all. I agree, the marines are excellent. Love the red goggles.

To answer a couple of points...

Yes, the 'Spaniards' are way too late for historically accurate conquistadors - but hang it all, they just look so darn Hollywood in their morions.

The Aztecs are from The Assault Group. They are quite small - true 25mm's. Truthfully, they're not that great, missing small details like thumbs on the open hands! But they paint up quite nicely.

You know the Conqistadors aren`t out of place, there were many campaigns fought after the initial Conquest in the 1540s-70s against Huaxtecs, Tarascans and other allied tribes, the generic warrior look means they dont have to be Aztecs etc so they fit in fine.

I agree the TAG ones are a little mundane but you have done a fantastic job on the shield designs as those shields are small, a little too small infact but that is not your fault. The best Aztec shields are the Eurekia ones though (plugging my fav figs) the new Huaxtecs that Outpost are doing have a rimmed shiled.

If you struggle with designs you can also use the VVV transfers which are nice and a good starting point.

I do like the skin tone and the red highlights in the hair are subtle but very well done

Thanks - I have another dozen of these on the painting shelf, so need to come up with some more shield designs. I'll check out VVV!

They may be a bit too large for the TAG shields :freak:

Anyway, here is the best reference on Aztec shields around, It by a guy called Chronofus he is a singular authority on the Aztec warfare and hopefully one day will get these into print

Wow! That is some resource. Thanks.
Should have looked at that before I just made mine up!
I'll try to do something a bit more ethnographically accurate with the rest of them (I might even have them ready by about round 9!)

  I wouldnt worry about it, they are a good set of resources and I have chetted with Chronofus a lot, especially when we were putting on the Tenochtitlan demo last year and in building our rules for Aztecs, Mayans and Inca etc. He lives in the outback and the research he does is very sound though even with my best anorak on I struggle to keep up with some of the primary and secondary references he gathers from libraries across the globe
