Looking for a simple game where it's 1-on-1 or teams, but only 1 on 1 at a time.

Think Pokemon/Digimon. Looking to get younger players in to a dice rolling game. Little bit of math skills and some strategy planning.

Any suggestions or a game system that can be converted?

I wonder if you could use hordes by privateer press but only pick a monster at a time to fight each other and delegate fury points rather than earn them.
I have the first ed rules that have army lists in it, not sure if the second ed does.
