28 mm true scale?

This question probably has been asked before but
what is the general consensus on what a 28 mm figure
scale would be. I started to make a 1/48 scale tank but
looks to big to me for 28mm.

1/56 is generally considered the '28mm' scale.

1/48 can look fine but it depends on which figures you use.

28mm is not a scale but a size. The discussion rages wether it should be measured bottom of base to crown or heel to eye or whatever. In reality, at least to me, 28mm is a convention, meaning an approximate and traditional height of a miniature of a fully grown human to which other miniatures (trolls , pixies, elefants...) are of relative height and size. There is definitely no set industry standard and gamers have a pragmatic approach to this and seems to reason that if it looks good on the table its a go.

But I agree with redzed, 1/56 is generally better than 1/48.

actually "28mm" is a size and a proportion convention that has changed over time and is also subject to variation.

Applied to contraptions that claim to conform to scales like 1/56 or 1/48 (which is not always correct), it means that 1/56 fits the size of the 28mm miniatures, but usually has problems adapting to the oversized features, like feet, hands, heads and weapons (and equipment consequently), whereas 1/48 has no problems fitting the features (and the actual miniatures consequently)  but tends to look too large compared to the true size.

the rest is preference and taste. The question is rather irrelevant if You do not have to fit the figures into the vehicles and becomes paramount with open vehicles like jeeps and halftracks.
Since it is an issue of relativity it also depends on the range of miniatures You use.

Example:
Perry miniatures fit perfectly with 1/56, since these are closer to real-life proportions
Renegade miniatures would fit better with 1/48

Don't forget your figures are mounted on bases, increasing their overall height and thus making them look taller.
Best way too find out is putting your figure(s) next to a scale model.
If you think they match, you have a winner. If you don't like what you see, move on

Exactly, if your models are based and your vehicles aren't then 1/48 looks better. If you base your 1/56's then they look fine too. I found a great article in the how to section which spoke about humans gauging what looks right based upon how high a head is compared to the bonnet/roof line.

The other huge problem is that once you choose your scale you then need to find vehicles that fit that scale. 1/48 has lots of  wwII planes and cars but not much else. Cheap toys tend to be on the larger size. so whats your budget and availability?
