Alternative for my Gatormen?
« on: 13 September 2013, 09:54:29 AM »
Hi,

I'm a Hordes player and my favorite faction are the Minions, and more specific the Gatormen. So you've got a faction with all kinds of swamp creatures together...lovely stuff! Here's the stuff I painted so far:

The mainstay unit for the faction are the "Gatormen Posse" (http://www.paintoholic.nl/images/gatormen2.jpg). I love them and would like to have three units. But to have three of the same units is boring as hell. So I want each unit to be different. For my second unit I have Rackham Ophidians (snakemen) but I can't decide on my third unit.
I've spotted the Weresharks Reaper makes...fantastic styff. But a bit pricey (60 euros for 5...). So I'm still looking for a good alternative. Basically I'm looking for types of bugs, reptiles, amphibians, etc. They will be mounted on 40mm bases and must have big weapons.

Any ideas? You can be as wild or creative as you want :)

The prices may not be much better on these, and you'll have to check on scale, but some ideas...

Not sure if you wanted to avoid additional Crocodilians entirely, or if you just wanted to avoid repeat sculpts. If the latter, you could consider the Wargods Sebeki (mentioned by the poster above me as well):

https://www.crocodilegames.com/store/itemList.cfm?catID=26&sort=prodID

Hell Dorado's Lost faction also has some Crocodilians (their Squamata) figures. There are others in that faction that might fit your purposes too:

https://cipher-studios.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=36_41&sort=20a&page=2&zenid=qkj9jbaiviaj0l44biplh9suu5

Warhammer has some River Trolls (and a variety of Lizardmen):

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod750003a&_requestid=1621642

DnD Miniatures also had the Blackscale Lizardfolk:

http://ddm-images.s3.amazonaws.com/miniatures/0732.jpg

That one might look reasonable on a 40 mm base. I think most of their other (Greenscale) Lizardfolk would be too small.

Privateer has some Bog Trogs and one or two frog-inspired critters, but I'm not sure if you can substitute one Hordes figure for another. It seems like that could create some confusion.

If you set aside the weapon requirement, you could consider any number of Fishmen and Deep One figures, such as the Malifaux Swamp Mother:

Incidentally, Privateer's Monsterpocalypse had some Kaiju inspired by various marine animals, dinosaurs, and insects (amongst other things) but those figures might be too big for your purposes.

You could also go the "Swamp Thing" approach with figures like Malifaux's Mire Golem and DnD's Stormrage Shambler:

Cheers for the tips...they got me thinking and the links helped me a lot!

While searching the "Umber Hulk" popped into my head and I thought this one would be fantastic as proxies! Now I have the Chainmail Uber Hulk...but I need four more. I can get two of the Grenadier Umber Hulks:

So I need two more...unfortunately the WotC prepaints are insanely priced for bendy crapplastic. So the search continues.

There's these two on ebay Germany for ~€8.00 + shipping, seems halfways reasonable priced:

Crooked Dice have the Envoys (two different poses), while not umber hulks, they seem to have the same ancestorage (is that even a word?) : http://www.crooked-dice.co.uk/wp/product/envoy-1/

Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh! Those Envoys are even better! Four of those (with Lizardmen Temple Guard weapons) and the Chainmail Umber Hulk as the Bokor will be most excellent. The digital cookie goes to ink the troll!

lovely work on these gatormen
These miniatures are so great,  frequently i must tell myself I have no use for them to avoid a SACA (Sudden Attack of Compulsory Acquisition)
I use to play thinking about how to mix them with the frog men from otherworld, but I have no use for them, truly!

I may have really missed something, but is there any reason you're not considering GW Lizardmen, in any of their incarnations over 35 years or so (also includes Troglodytes)? Some of them should be quite easy to pick up on ebay.

There are varieties of Tyrannids that might work too, if you want to go for something a bit more alien (not ones with guns presumably).
