cleaning and repainting diecast toys

So I picked up a diecast plane that is a 1930's amphibean for pulp games. The problem is it is covered in decals or stickers with the company logo of whoever had these made up. Does anybody have a recomendation on how to get rid of these nasty things? the plane itself is 1/48th scale and was good deal from Ebay. I mean my pilots had to fly something, right?

Are they sticky stickers?  or water slide type?

If they are paper or plastic stickers, Methylated Spirits or White spirits will take them off.  Soak them to get the spirits under the 'paper - plastic' and then let it dissolve the glue.  Use tissue soaked in the spirit an wipe off the excess glue.  These should not effect the paint or plastic surfaces.

Dont be tempted with nail polish remover.....

Cant help with the water slide type though.
