Quick question regarding ANZAC gear
« on: 09 December 2013, 01:28:36 AM »
Hello Everyone,

Im painting up a couple of ANZAC test models to combat my Ottoman Turk platoon.

Im currently stuck when it comes to the webbing colours and gear. What colours would the webbing including ammo pouches and also the canteen be? Lastly, i noticed a few of the wounded aussies are wearing what appears to be undershirts, what colours would these have been? White?

Thanks in advance,

Andrew

Can't claim to be an authority on this, but I can tell you what I've seen in depictions and a couple of titbits I know. Paintings, colour plates (and a certain movie with a famous drunken road warrior) show both white shirts and the British greyback style being worn.

If the figures are light horse in bandoleer equipment, that will be leather. 1908 pattern webbing would be "khaki", but I have seen this vary from a light sand to a bright green. Take your pick. Also, due to a shortage of webbing, some Australians were issued with leather equipment modelled on the 1908 pattern webbing. So you can paint the webbing as leather instead on Aussies if you prefer.

I also highly recommend popping over to Mark Hargreaves' blog: http://over-open-sights.blogspot.com/ . He's painted more than a few ANZACS up and generously offers free WW1 painting guides.
