Ancient wargaming rules suggestions
« on: 25 February 2014, 10:16:40 AM »
Hello,

I´m looking for ancient wargaming rules.
They should not be toooo complicated (like Field of Glory) but going deeper than
WAB where the properties of different troop types are (in my view) not considered sufficient.

I am grateful for suggestions!  :D

Cheers

Have you considered Armati 2?

Hello janner,

Whilst not particularly well known, it sounds somewhat close to what you are looking for and is well respected by those seeking both an enjoyable game and historically plausible outcomes  ;)

Impetus might also be worth a looksee

I highly recommend Impetus.  Impetus basing is genius, with each unit based on a single large base.  You can also do single figs in a large base so that you can play Hail Caesar and Impetus.  I do like being able to port my armies across multiple sets of rules.

Most importantly, Impetus is fun and the rules are not too long or difficult.  I did a review of my first game of Impetus on my blog here.  I also painted 3 Impetus armies in 15mm which you can see here.

If I could find a partner in Minneapolis, I'd be painting and playing Ancients in Impetus.

Hail Cesar are a good set of rules, better than WAB (IMHO) and yet are not too complicated to pick up.  For me the advantage is also the game mechanisms broadly spill over into Black Powder and Pike and Shotte so I don't have to learn a completely new set of rules when I shift eras.

Hello janner,
Hello Twin Cities Gamer,

many thanks - I will have a look at Impetus. :)

Hello Hu Rhu,

thanks a lot too - but unfortunately I´m a not a fan of Black powder and its related. :'(
There might be good arguments for command-throws in wargames - but BP with the command-throws (and the possibility of a blunder) - in my view - has too much external control.

Hello!

I'd thoroughly recommend Scarab's "War & Conquest" ruleset.

Some have suggested that it's an evolution of WAB, but it's far more than that with many subtle improvements that give a cleaner and more enjoyable gaming experience.

Here's a link to reports and feedback from a recent gaming day

Enjoy
