Big Gun and a question
« on: 04 May 2014, 05:13:33 PM »
The Mark V 8" Howitzer from HLBSCo.

Question: How were such mighty beasts painted up in the Mespot and Palestine theatres? Finding it hard to track down any references. Ta.

Can't help with your Mespot/ME paint question, but that is a magnificent beast.

Any plans to weather the rest of it? The treads look great, but the rest looks a bit too clean by comparison!

First class piece of ordnance  :-* :-* :-*

Mark -  you took the words right out of my mouth. If anyone does have any such reference it would be a great help to the two of these I'd like to paint up for that theatre

Follow up question for the sculptors out there. A generic world war one heavy artillery crew in shirt sleeves, puttees and bare headed (or head swop) would be a wonderful addition for the ever growing number of heavy guns joining the 28mm establishment. If you wouldn’t mind awfully and all please  ???

Was the 8" gun deployed to Palestine or Mesopotamia?  I have 4.5", 5", and 6" howitzers and 60 pounders in my Palestine/Mesopotamia collection.  I've painted my RA guns in olive green, barring evidence to the contrary.

If you find different evidence for color (or would that be "colour"?), please share it with us!

Thanks, Jeff

Actually, Jeff, that is a very good question. My original question really applies to big guns in general. Lovely evidence of the 6 inch Howitzer in Palestine being dragged by Holt tractor in this film clip:

Interesting photo of artillery park, Jerusalem 1917. 60pdrs in foreground and 6 inch Howitzers in background. Look carefully at the barrel of the nearest 60pdr. Is there a hint of cammo painting here or is it my imagination? Judging by the tone of the picture, the paintwork looks pretty dark. Brunswick green?

The Osprey books on the subject suggest they were left olive green, but camouflaged under sandy nets

I suspect that camouflage wouldn't have been as critically needed on the Ottoman fronts at least in part because the Ottoman air force wasn't exactly tearing up the skies.

I joined my gun with pirate swords, and sailed the seas of cyberspace.

I've got this book! I'd forgotten. Sometimes one can have too many volumes. Yes..... if I remember the author says that humbrol Khaki Drab is the shade for heavy guns no matter where they were.

Yep... I agree that the need for cammo  from aerial reccy was far less important in sandy places. Now... who makes a 28mm 6inch Howitzer and Holt Tractor?
