the Broken Sword
« on: April 06, 2015, 01:01:35 PM »
I just finished the Broken Sword by Poul Anderson and am amazed how good it is. Cursed demon swords monstrous Jötun horses, doomed characters and epic battles, all written like a norse saga. In fact there are many overlaps with the Saga of Hervor.
I never heard of the book until recently wile it was published in the 1950's and it was a big influence on Moorcock but also Jes Goodwin. In fact his elves are clearly inspired by Anderson. GW style orcs seem more inspired by Anderson's greenskinned, muscled trolls than Tolkien thinking of it.

Strangely though I can't think of any miniatures range that is more directly inspired by this book. Nothing that represents Skafloc or Valgard. Am I wrong?

I have only recently discovered this book and have thoroughly enjoyed reading it on my Nook, I have just purchased the audio book to listen to whilst painting. I am basing my current skirmish game around this, and a few other influences.

For figures I am looking at Red Box Games, for their Njorn, Aenglish and Elves, still not decided on the trolls/ogres and goblins (considering Tre's Reaper Orcs for trolls, and GW's Moria Golins with a few mutant Goblin town Goblins), would be interested for other suggestions.

I haven't read the book, but for Norse Trolls, take a look to Ral Partha's Ogres and Trolls.

This is one of my all time favorites. I did some conversions of the Tre Manor Reaper Orcs.

I've never found a range of elves I thought suitable.
