Yeah, I'm quite sure I've seen a similar miniature in a blog, too... I'll post it if I find the pic again.
Anyway, yours is different and beautiful and I like it very much. So, I think you deserve credit for your Gollum

I do something similar, on high detail models I prime grey and give the entire model a quick wash to bring out the details a bit better, and like you said it provides instant shading.
