Hmm seems like I'll need a good coat of white paint underneath where I plan to do PVA+WSS.

I am worried I recently looked at an old mini of mine painted at least 8 years ago and the snow was done with GW white paint, typical stock standard white wood glue and Woodland Scenics snow and it now has a yellowed effect and is no longer the crisp white it once was. If this is unavoidable I will never do another snow base again...

Very helpful. I wish I had this guide, when I began to experiment with snow for my battle board...

I think PVA glue is the culprit there, if my plasticville ebay purchases are anything to go by...  I've been thinking about glues that won't yellow out, anyone have a suggestion?  :)

Nice find, thanks for posting.

Looking out the window and enjoying the feeling of not being outside at -23 C I can say that the lower right corner PVA+MB+WSS looks about right, needs a tad of white into the mix perhaps :)

got part numbers for the products used? Looking for the Woodland Scenics stuff now. Is it Winter Effects SP4123 or Snow SP4187?

 Thank you

Try acrylic gesso, in my other career as a painter I use it daily to treat canvas and paper and it's completely non-yellowing and a beautiful warm white base. Pick a good quality product (I use Golden, it's excellent) and you won't have any problems.

It should be everything you need: heavy tooth, stable pigment, and matte medium.

Great suggestion, I will try that out. Thanks!

So will this stuff do the job? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Golden-0003550-5-236ml-Gesso/dp/B0006IJZF2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1452298664&sr=8-2&keywords=golden+acrylic+gesso

I take it you will then not need paint nor glue will it keep the snow in place?

I haven't tried to use it as an adhesive to hold the snow in place, so I can't speak to that from experience. I was suggesting it as an experiment because it is non-yellowing, is designed to adhere to a wide range of surfaces, and has a bit of body or tooth to it.

It is acrylic medium based, which is what I use (matte medium) to hold all the sand and static grass to the bases of my miniatures and the MDF bases on my terrain. So. . . if you give it a try, post up here and let us know! I suspect that it will work wonderfully.
