Scenic Snow Questions

I have just received these minis in the mail this morning, and although with my current condition it will probably take me all December to get them done, I now feel myself in dire need of some snow to put on their bases when I have painted them.



Thus, my questions:

• What kind of scenic snow is the best to use (modelling product, that is, I do NOT want to use baking soda)?
• Where can I get it (preferably on the European side of the Atlkantic - although cheap Chinese/ebay sources are an option, if any)?

I want a 'post card' effect of nice glittering, newly fallen snow.

Any help you can offer on this is greatly appreciated - I can easily find some products, but I would like your recommendations before rushing out and getting something that I might later regret.

When I did snow bases I did a heavy dry brush of off-white, then applied patches of PVA and dunked the base in talcum powder.
Worked well, but it doesn't give a glittery 'icy snow' look.
Does smell nice, though!

ultra fine white glitter to finish?

Maybe build up snow with filler first, then add snow effects (whatever you have available) finish with a sprinkling of ultra fine white glitter? I read about this somewhere, don't remember where, sorry.

It seems to come in a separate tub, too. I'll see if somebody has it somewhere around here.

I made some good experiences with Woodland Scenics snow. I bought some very fine glitter and combined both products with Acrylic Medium Gloss. This achieves a more melting snow look, but can be used to built the base up. You can then apply PVA and sprinkle snow and glitter on. You could experiment with adding some white paint to the mix or using matte gel instead. I have somewhere a test piece with different mixes and will take some pictures for you tomorrow.

I finished prepping and priming the minis today, and have glued them on corks to start painting tomorrow, so I am very grateful for the suggestions and help I get here! 

I had a peek at Warlords snow scatter, too, anybody had experience with that? Not exactly 'glittering', but looks OK in the pics I have seen.

Try this.  Easy to apply with a small pallette knife and then stipple for effect.  Drys hard.



This is it used on a terrain board but it will work on bases as well.

I might take you up on that - provided it is possible to send it from the UK (I think there are limitations on 'liquids', which I don't know if this classifies as)?

How much does that tub contain (sorry, I do not trust my eyes to decode the text in that picture - does it say 110 ml)? And what is the price?

I have found a Danish webstore selling it in 59 ml tubs for DKK 39 (+ postage), about £ 5.5 excluding postage - but that might be about half the quantity available to you?

It is a pot with 118ml of paste. The local cost is £4.99.  There is enough in one pot to cover a bit more than one 1' x 1' terrain board or possibly about 100 - 150 miniature bases depending on how thick you layer it.

I am sure that the paste will not be a problem to post.  Drop me a pm if you want a pot. The cost to you would be postage only.

sorry didn't get around to do the experiments I intended to do and won't get to it before Thursday. I came a cross a snow spray that achieves a similar effect. It is pretty much a spray can that has some gunk in it that textures any surface in a snow-like manner. If you place your miniatures on the base after they are painted this may be an option (maybe for the second one?). It is maybe better for larger pieces.

Would work for terrain pieces, but my minis are firmly based before I paint them - thanks, anyway, I shall keep my eyes open - you never know if you suddenly come across something useful, however unlikely it is to pop up in this country
