Welcome to the beginnings of Redemption
« on: 23 June 2016, 08:05:51 PM »
Good Evening,

I have gotten 'back into' wargaming and have been at the table for the last year. I love the history of The Old West, and have been playing Dead Man's Hand, which are a fun, cinematic style set of skirmish rules. Below are a few shots of my Outlaws, who need both naming and a back story. I am far from a master painter (started painting last year, my dad used to do it all!), so go easy on me! I do find flesh tones and eyes particularly challenging, hence a real range here. The town itself is made up of a 'Wasteland' gaming mat from Deepcut Studios, and the buildings are MDF from TT Combat. I am debating whether or not to paint them, but have never painted buildings before so feel a little reluctant.

Anyway, I had a game at my local club on Tuesday evening. Below, you can see my Outlaws holed up at the far end of town awaiting the inevitable arrival of The Law. Luckily, I was able to identify the witness early doors who soon felt 2 barrels of a shot gun. The gang are slowly gaining in notoriety and will be back in Redemption in a couple of weeks time.

I am now looking for some suitable scatter terrain (suggestions welcome) and in time hope to try a few other rule sets (as before). I am also looking at the FIW period, and a kind chap on here has sold me a few Mountain Men to get started! Not long til my (teacher) summer holidays here in the UK, so I will have plenty of time to devote to the hobby after long walks in the countryside. Perhaps even cooking the odd meal for the wife.....she at least has shown some respect for these guys.

How do you feel about the Deep Cut mat?  I grabbed a Wasteland one also and feel the scale is a bit off.  I'm keeping it unless I can find someone to buy it at a convention, but I wasn't overly in love with it.  I love the Steppe pattern, really hoping they'll do a proper desert town layout at some point.

Agreed. I like it, but in truth it's not quite right for a western town. I'll be using it until a better alternative presents itself.
Jim.

It definitely gets the job done, and I've used mine a few times for several games, but it didn't work as well as I was hoping when I ordered it.  Nice to see the start of your town - want me to add it to the Town Roll Call thread?

Don't sell yourself yourself short;  Your models are cleanly done and look good.  As you gain confidence you can always come back to these models somewhere down the road and further develop your layering but as they are would be welcome on any tabletop.

I'm just about to start an old west project and have been thinking about building a homemade 4'x4' canvas mat with sand and caulking because I prefer texture to illustrated details.  I only have a model and half painted though and my "town" is still a rubble pile of scored balsa wood :) .  I'm going to have to catch up before any more old west town's run off with all the cool names.  There are some really sharp looking painted towns on the thread and as many modellers that made them that way.  Hit some of them up for advice and you could really bring Redemption to life.

Redemption looks like it's off to a great start, so keep posting. Looking forward to seeing more of this.

Great start. Your painting skills are fine for tabletop quality.

I ended up buying a field mat from them and laying down cork roads.  I'm pretty happy with the results.

Yeah, when I contacted Deep Cut they actually were talking about producing a mousepad material road lay-over...something I'd have been interested in as well.

They did produce it.  I was not too impressed.

Instead of overlays, it's almost like you have to purchase a bunch of tiles and use them to build out your table instead of laying them on top.  Their suggestion to me was to just cut off the terrain edges if I didn't like them.  Not exactly the best of ideas.

Ick...yeah, not at all what I had in mind.  Oh well.  lol

Shame too, as I think in theory the idea is sound.  If they considered doing their most popular designs in say... 2'x4' sheets I could see it working quite well - allowing you to have several layouts with printed roads etc.  But not small tiles that you need a bunch of.  Nooo thanks.

When I spoke to them I had envisions simple roads made out of the mousepad material (it's heavy, has rubber backing and won't shift, and generally lays quite flat) and they'd sell just the bits of road.  The tiles are far less interesting.

I was thinking it through, and they would have to have custom cutting dies to be able to cut out the road shapes out of the material.  So I can see where this solution is the easiest, cheapest solution.

Still don't like it though.  :)
