Starting a campaign question?
« on: December 24, 2015, 02:24:52 AM »
We you put together a starting band for a campaign for frostgrave, are you allowed to go into debt to get the troops you want?  I know you start with 500 gold, or i think you do, then if you spend 200 on an apprentice, that only leaves 300 leftover for the other troops,  so could I go into debt by buying for example at least 2 knights and 2 marksman?  Each of those costs 100 and so I would be 100 gold in debt.  Is this something that I missed in the rules or is it left open to interpretation?

Consensus seems that going into debt is not acceptable.  It depends on your group whether you allow it as a house rule.  If so though,I suggest that Felstadian loan sharks...know how to deal with delinquent wizards.
You, sir, are not allowed to attempt a takeover of the solar system until your octopus sobers up.

I'd say this is the type of thing that would need to be agreed in your games club. Additional gold at the start could have huge knock on effects by making you significally more powerful.

This calculator might help you build a balanced gang within the 500GP limit: http://www.battletortoise.com/frostgrave/roster.html

The only reference that I can find regarding going into debt is when a wizard was injured and must miss a game, unless you spend 100 gold for a potion.

As for house rules, I don't think that it would be a good idea to allow players to go into debt when creating their warbands.  It would make more sense to simply have each player start with, say, 1,000 gold to build a warband instead of 500 gold.

There are so many ways you can handle this for your campaign... and none of them is wrong.

You can create a loanshark in your campaign if you want.

-> let him have unlimited amounts of money... or maybe just d20 x 10 each turn.

-> you can pay him back (150% of the amount loaned course ;-) ) whenever you want or he demands it back immediately after a single game.

these are just some ideas to make loansharks a part of your campaign...  remember that you do need a downside to the obvious advantage of being able to loan money.

That said...  I personally wouldn't want the option to loan money in my campaigns, 500 gc is enough to start a warband.  But if you do, go ahead.

I really like the loan shark idea but it does add a layer of administration complexity.

In my games so far many minis die. Going into dept - will You be the only one? doubt it - then only more expensive profiles will die, nonetheless. In the end you have dead minis AND a depth.
It doesn't work in real, will not work in the game.  :D

So, either start with i.e. 100 or 200 gp etc more or try to kill your oponent with hard but honest bloody work and earn your reputation by killing better than they do.  ;)

However, I also very much like the loan shark idea ... hnhnhn ...  >:D
best wishes

I'd be against it - half the fun (for my group at least) is being able to improve your warband beyond the initial restricted troops you can initially afford.
