Clue me in on the 3rd Crusade
« on: 23 February 2016, 12:29:52 PM »
Hi,

So I am thinking about collecting stuff for the 3rd crusade, I am quite new to this and have limited knowledge, so first question is,

what was the difference in crusader uniforms from the 1st to the 3rd, I like the look of the Perrys minis and they say you could use the mail figs as lower ranks for the 3rd, but what would the higher ranks wear that would be different to the 1st, I know you have the military orders which I can use Gripping Beast figs, but where would i go for standard/ non military order minis

The main difference as far as I recall was the liveried cloth worn over the mail which gripping beast and crusader both produce

First Crusaders were basically Norman in appearance.

As you get towards the Third Crusade you begin to see much more mail, including full sleeves, gloves and trousers. Helmet design changes and you see more elaborate nasal helmets, kettle helmets and various other developments with face plates etc. too. You also see the shape of the shields change with heater shields starting to come into use. And as Tyrion suggested you begin to see surcoats.

Black Tree Design do some really nice figures for the later crusades.

Livery may have been used- I've not seen any evidence of that though I could be wrong.

Certainly heraldic devices were starting to come into use and a knight, if deemed important enough, would probably be sporting his personal heraldic device on a surcoat.

You also have to take into consideration the changes in armours too.

I'm, slowly converting some Perry First Crusade into those of the third.

I think Curtey's miniatures have the option of various period helmets if you buy them as a unit (go to the unit packs section), including late 12th century ones which are perfect for the 3rd crusade.

The only downside is that you have to buy them as sets of 12, but they sell seperate heads too, so it could be worth a look.

As a disclaimer I've never actually bought any of these, only perved their website a lot so I can't comment on the quality of casting/customer service etc.

I bought a few of the Curteys feudals and they are very nice figures, their more recent sculpts in the range seem a bit better than their older ones but that being said both are good.

No turcopoles in the first crusade, were there? Tafur? The military orders?

Certainly no Military Orders. As for Turcopoles, it's open to debate. It also is dependent on what one's definition of a Turcopole was :)
