Cor, a map an' everything. I'd be interested in seeing the finer details if you ever put them online. Do the colours denote anything geographical, or just political?(Added a bit more to me own, back up the topic, too.)
Myself, I like all maps - one of the reasons I joined the "Cartographer's Guild". I prefer a more pictorial style like the Minaria map from Divine Right, which would be just about perfect if it were not for some silly place names. Without hexes is better than with as well - somtimes I find the hexes are too bold and dominate the map. At other times the map is drawn to conform to the hexes so you end up with unnatural paths for rivers and roads.
But I have wanted to do this for some time so thought why not.
A lot of the guys over at the Cartographer's Guild seem to use GIMP to make their maps. GIMP is a free graphic software package. The Guild site has lots of tutorials and examples of maps others have done. Google should find both.
