How to sculpt a fedora?
« on: 17 February 2009, 04:40:16 AM »
Hello, everyone.

I wonder if I could get some basic sculpting guidance. I have one of the 28mm Black Cat Bases Pulp figures - specifically the fig with the trenchcoat and gasmask. I would like to add a fedora in order to represent my pulp alter-ego here, but I've never done anything quite that "complicated". Would anyone be willing to suggest a few tips for sculpting a hat of that kind?

Not sure about a fedora but I just used brownstuff/greenstuff from Reaper for the hats I made for my KKBB spys and spyetts. (see blog for pictures).  I just flattened out a piece for the brim and drapped it over the head then added the top part and joined the two togeather with a moist scuplting tool, then shaped the hat to what I wanted.  A fedora should not be really that hard just indent the top and the front two sides.  I do all my work while ithe greenstuff/brownstuff still plyable but you can always sand it to shape after its dry too.

Depending on how sharp/thin you want the brim, it might be better to make an oval/circular brim out of thin plasticard and then sculpt the crown with greenstuff (or you could use a plasticard brim and then thicken it with putty to your taste).

When adding hats I usually use a thin brass or copper washer from the hardware store for the brim. They are sturdy but can be manipulated far easier than steel. The rest of the hat I then make out of green stuff.
