Action at Egorlikskaya (June 1918)
« on: 28 November 2016, 02:04:21 PM »
Our mini-campaign continues!

Now, as far as white onslaught goes on, supreme red commander in the region, comrade Sorokin, launches strong flank assault, using masses of hastily-raised conscripts. His target is Egorlikskaya - capturing it will cut main White forces off their rear bases in Novocherkassk. Fortunately for Sorokin, defences of Egorlikskaya is rather weak and relies mostly on local peasants and wounded soldiers from rear hospitals. Denikin sends some reserves from Kornilov regiment, but it should move quickly to get to the battlefield in time...

Overall sight of the battlefield.

Lines of red conscripts, backed by HMG's and artillery.

Reds advance, despite some losses from defensive fire. Artillery is mostly ineffective, but some shots were really devastating for whites.

SPAD VII fighter strikes from above and wreaks havoc upon red conscripts, killing some and frightening much more with his only bomb! This timely arrival gives defenders time to reorganise.

Kornilov's reinforcements arrive and engage reds on the flank.

Firefight is very bloody for reds, but they manage to drive volunteers from the table with the help from artillery battery.

Fate of battle was decided in the church. Reds managed to capture it, but white commander rallied last defenders and personally led them to the close combat. Chances were thin, but nearly half of red conscripts  suddenly decided to change sides.

That was too much of a chellenge for the remaining reds, and their advance quickly turned first into retreat, and then into total rout...

Great looking game. I really like the church. A close fought battle to the end. I love that it all hinged on conscripts changing sides! Urrah! Urrah!

Great looking stuff, the Kornilovs in particular. Sounds like it was a fun, tense game!

Thank you!

Yes, the battle was really tense - reds had good opportunities to win it, but finally some bad decisions + some bad rolls gave historical result  :D

Fascinating stuff.

What decided the conscripts changing sides? Is it in the actual rules?

Yes, it is a special rule.
They are very cheap, but at the start of the close combat owner rolls d10 for each figure in contact, each 8+ gives you a traitor :'(
White conscripts are the same, but as we are playing 1918 there are not many of them in Southern armies.
