Recommendations - Garrisons for Caribbean Towns
« on: 10 November 2016, 03:46:06 PM »
Anyone have any recommendations as to first time period of figures I should use - WSS or SYW - I am looking at time period 1700 - 1740.  Also, would like a random mix  not all one static pose on the figures - I guess I am looking for character :)  Any recommendations as to manufacturer and line?

Thanks,

Frank

If your limit is up to 1740 then WSS is really your only option. If so I would start to look at Ebor and Front Rank but there is a lot of small ranges out there with bits and pieces that could fit that period. If you would go for SYW 1750-1760s I would look at Foundry, Eureka, Crusader and Perry, in the latters AWI range you can find a lot of variety that also can be used for SYW/FIW

I believe the "Golden Age" of piracy was roughly 1680 to 1720 so maybe you can reach back to ranges for the War of the League of Augsburg figures to supplement WSS figures.  That would certainly offer more options for "character".  Or you can just get a sculpt of me!   lol

You seem to be looking for 25/28mm figures. Age of Piracy peters out after the early 1700s, though privateering in wartime was still good business. Old Glory has some great figures in their Pirates line, especially the 'Governor and Creepy Henchmen' and 'Governor's Fop Dragoons' bags.

They have lots of WSS infantry, too.

I'd use their F&IW British for later 18th century.  F&IW French infantry should work for later French or Spanish.

Front Rank Miniaitures, lovely figures, the poses can be a little static, but suit the period well, especially for drilled government troops.

Take a look at Casting Room Miniatures' WSS range. Great minis with bags of character.

Since the colonies were often behind the times as far as uniforms & equipment I would go with even earlier period troops. ECW dismounted dragoons might work. Also Jacobite rebellion English troops or Malburian types might be just about right.

i second that !
They have a splendid range and very well sculpted. The faces are awesome ! And they are available at piece (not blister or pack).
Perfect for skirmish use

I would go for League of Augsburg/9 Years War or Marlburian era miniatures myself. Dixon do a nice range and the 'standard poses' often have head variants too!

Take care about Dixon, they are smaller than the actual 28mm   ;)
