Painted 1860s colonial New Zealand Wars figures
« on: 20 November 2016, 08:55:13 AM »
The main campaigns of the colonial New Zealand Wars took place from the 1840s to the 1870s. Over those 30 or more years, uniforms and weapons changed. My NZ Wars wargaming armies have so far primarily  represented the early campaigns of the 1840s, when the British still wore red coats. But I’ve recently painted some Perry Miniatures ‘British Intervention Force’ figures to complete a small  British and colonial army of the 1860s.

Pics and info here on my blog: https://arteis.wordpress.com/2016/11/20/colonial-new-zealand-wars-of-the-1860s/

Here's a couple of sample pics from the above blog posting:

Great stuff! I am really tempted to start this period after watching "River Queen". I saw on your blog that you are looking for "shawl-order militia. I guess you have seen these from OG:

Now that's a really beautiful little colonial army! Congrats!
I'm drawn to these figures like a moth to a flame. And I really shouldn't even look at them!

Lovely looking figures and lovely paint job on them, interesting to see some of the under represented spheres of colonial wargaming getting a showing. :)

Hi Traveller.  I have considered those Old Glory figures previously.  But they are quite old sculpts now.  And, worst of all, they are in bare feet, rather than wearing socks and boots and socks - which just doesn't look right. They should look more like this:

Lovely stuff Roly.

The 1860s is really where it's 'at' for the Maori Wars gamer....shame the Eureka Forest Rangers only got 2/3rds the way to being financed. I think if they'd been sculpted sales would've reached critical mass...

Glad to see this era getting some attention.

Gorgeous paint !   I love your shading and brushwork.

PLEASE paint the inside of your gun muzzle black !   I cringe every time I see it gleaming brass.

Keep up the great work !

Ha ha, Chick!  Not only do I have to paint the inside of the Armstrong's barrel black, but the whole barrel should be black, not brass. I also have a couple of other minor touch-up jobs to do on these figures, based on some great info I've got from knowledgeable people since I posted these pics.
