Aztec size differentials

Well having talked myself into an Aztec campaign I need some new toys. Going with what we already have we are going 15mm.

I was just wondering how the different ranges differ e.g.
Tin Soldier, Essex and Black Hat... and any others that are out there.
Any help on relative size would be great.
I have some Tin Soldier samples (Years ago I had a DBM army using them and really do like them, but have a vague recollection that they were bigger)
Any help greatly appreciated.

Pendraken are close to releasing a juicy range of 10mm Aztecs. I'm certainly planning to get quite a lot of those.

Tin soldier are "very big" for 18mm.
Essex are small for 18mm than they more old ranges.
Black hat (ex gladiator) are ideal if you stay with Aztec. Mayas are larger but correct and mixable with standards 18mm....

I have got samples fro Tin Soldier and Black Hat.

Cool.... they are more accurate of the two, but a lot smaller. Not sure about the hand fastened to the shield though... bit of a weak spot.... decisions, decisions....

I did my Aztec and Conquistador collection in 15mm.  Most of my Aztecs are by Gladiator with some Minifig, Essex and a few Naismith.  My Aztec townspeople are modified Blue Moon Deep Dark Africa African villagers... the main modification was using Milliput to give those figures new hair styles.  The vast majority of my Conquistadors are Essex.  You can see my collection in a diorama-style layout at www.warin15mm.com/Aztec-Gallery.html

How does Essex and Gladiator work together?

The best I can offer is to tell you to look at pictures 28 and 29 of my gallery.  That might be the only one where you get good side-by-side of my Aztecs and the Conquistador figures which is to say Gladiator and Essex.  At the time I put this collection together (which was awhile ago), no one that I could find (and I looked hard) made defined "Conquistador" figures.  Essex was the best I could do to serve that function, and I'm happy with them.  Again at that time Gladiator made the best line of Aztecs I could find in the size I wanted so I went with them as the basis of my Aztec collection, and I think they worked well when side-by-side with Essex figures.  The Aztec townspeople were a late discovery.  I wanted civilian Aztecs but could find none in 15mm, but the modified Blue Moon 15/18mm Deep Dark Africa worked really well for that purpose.  I also use that line for my Aztec canoes and their rowers.  There is a wonderful 28mm Aztec and Conquistador diorama style layout you should take a look at.  It served as my inspiration... I stole a lot of ideas. I can't remember the name of the collection right off the top of my head, but I believe I wrote about it in my write up about my collection, and you should find it's name there so you can google it... well worth looking/beautiful work.  Over the time I was working on my collection, I probably looked at that 28mm layout for hours... wonderful stuff.  Good luck with your project... Aztecs and Conquistadors are lots of fun.

This was a demo Neil Burt put on in 2007 at salute, warfare in reading and bovington, Neil made the terrain whilst i provided conquistadors and some of the aztecs. Neil is an amazing painter and he even oainted individual feathers in the shield designs. It may give you some more ideas

That 2007 Salute layout is the one I was referring to.  It is really wonderful, and I can't imagine doing the collection I did if I hadn't had it as a reference.  I always enjoy looking at it.
