Thank you for sharing this. I must say I'm astonished.  

...I thought that I had an overall knowledge of French history (as a wargamer and French citizen) but I never noticed that the (very-short-lived) French 2nd Republic was involved in this. You don't learn it at school. Although it's well-known (I mean well-known by people interested in history and/or wargames = a tiny minority) that Italian unity happened under the reign of Napoleon III and that's when Savoie and Nice became French, but it was some years later.

So the bombardment hit the back of the building? Was it French or Italian artillery?

The damage was done to the front of the building, the rear elevation was a mirror of the front, this can be seen in 18th drawings of Villa.
